Sote's Rise

In 1987, thanks to the active efforts of local authorities, the insightful advice and planning provided by experts, and suggestions from deputies to the People's Congress, the Wanzhou region invested 181.7 million yuan in the implementation of the 300,000-ton-per-year vacuum salt production project at the Chuandong Salt Factory. This project boasts the largest single-unit capacity for well-mined salt production in China and features the deepest brine wells in the world. For the first time in China, it employed a “circulating fluidized bed” boiler—designed and manufactured entirely by Chinese engineers—while adopting the two-alkali process for brine purification for the very first time. The factory is also the sole member in Asia of the International Association for Brine Mining via Water Dissolution. In an effort to explore a path of modern enterprise development with Chinese characteristics, and as a contemporary inheritor of the Ba Salt culture, the Chuandong Salt Factory has undergone multiple rounds of reform and restructuring to become Chongqing.

Salt-alkali integration

In 2003, driven by the growing demand for high-purity vacuum salt and in accordance with the guiding principle set forth in Chairman Li Peng’s inscription during his inspection of Sote Group—“Develop the salt chemical industry to support the Three Gorges migrants”—Sote Salt Chemicals constructed a new vacuum salt production facility with an annual capacity of 1 million tons. As the largest single-unit facility of its kind in China, the project had a total investment of 194.15 million yuan and was completed and put into operation in December 2006. The project employs an externally heated, forced-circulation, five-effect salt-making process, featuring energy-efficient five-effect evaporation tanks, heating chambers, circulation pumps, and fully automated small-scale equipment.

In December 2018, Hunan Light Industry and Salt Group completed the full acquisition of Sote Salt Chemical and its parent company, Chongqing Xiangyu Salt Chemical Co., Ltd., thereby clearly defining the company’s strategic positioning as “salt plus chemicals.” In line with Hunan Light Salt Group’s strategic vision—“Among the three major players in the national salt industry, one will surely be Hunan Salt”—Sote Salt Chemical leverages ancient Paleozoic rock salt sourced from ultra-deep wells over 3,000 meters underground and draws brine from the Ganning Reservoir in Wanzhou District, a source of drinking water. By fully capitalizing on its superior product quality—characterized by a sodium chloride purity exceeding 99.7% and a particle size distribution of 0.3mm to 0.8mm accounting for 97%—Sote Salt Chemical produces China’s highest-quality edible salt products.
